Ross joined The Dogs Trust and fellow MPs to hand in a petition which has been signed by over 11,000 people to call the Government to act to end puppy smuggling with tighter controls and tougher penalties to deter such a crime.
Puppies are continuing to suffer at the hands of unscrupulous breeders and dealers across Central and Eastern Europe. Ross and The Dogs Trust have delivered a mountain of evidence to the Government to show how bleak the picture is. However, thousands of puppies are still being put through this horrendous ordeal with many families at risk of buying an illegally imported puppy.
Dogs Trust has been investigating this problem since 2014 with its reports revealing shocking evidence of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) being exploited by illegal puppy importers.
The charity’s fourth report supplies further evidence of corrupt vets in central and eastern Europe falsifying documents for under age puppies to be brought into the UK; pregnant dogs being smuggled so their puppies can be born in the UK and lax border controls.
Ross said, "I was delighted to join MPs to hand over a Dogs Trust petition signed by over 11,000 people to Downing Street. The Government must act to end puppy smuggling with tighter controls and much stronger penalties to deter this horrific crime."
